This story highlights the new handheld gaming consoles that are coming in 2023. SAR Insight is following this market, and tracking the brands and products introduced. It will be one of 150+ devices that we will track in our new DATAportl service, which is due to launch at the start of 2024.

The handheld gaming market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of >8% from 2023 to 2028, which might not seem like a lot, but it is twice that for fixed games consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation. What is perhaps most interesting here is that currently, Nintendo accounts for the vast majority of handheld gaming consoles today but there is a whole raft of brands that will drive future growth in this segment including ASUS, Ayaneo, Sony, Valve, and many more (SAR has tracked 15 brands so far in our product database).

The article states “The handheld gaming world is rapidly changing. Every week it seems as though a new handheld pops up out of somewhere. While Ayaneo might announce a new system multiple times a year, what about the rest of the landscape?

Well, from fully-fledged handheld PCs to Android devices and single-board computers (SBC) running their own operating system, there’s never been a better time to get into it.”

I am inclined to agree with most if this. There is a big opportunity for semiconductor vendors to move into this relatively new market and it could be one of the sweet spots in a difficult 2023 in many other markets. Handheld gaming devices require a significant amount of hardware to enable fast processing, stable connectivity, superior audio, etc. and brands will increasingly be looking to differentiate their offering from the competition as more enter the market.

Mobile gaming continues to increase in popularity, and while most of this gaming is done on a smartphone (and will continue to be), a dedicated handheld console makes sense for more serious gamers who still want to be able to play on the move.
