Weltrend recently announced the release of its WT6676F and WT667F USB Power Delivery (PD) controllers which it claims are the industry’s first which support the USB PD Revision 3.1, enabling full support for output voltages up to 48V and power output up to 240W.

Since the USB IF announced the USB PD specification revision 3.1 in May 2021, only a few USB PD 3.1 enabled solutions have entered the market capable of delivering more than the previous 100W power limit. Apple’s 140W USB-C charger for its updated MacBook Pro which launched in October 2021 was the first known to SAR. Xinspower has since launched two multi-port fast chargers with PD 3.1 capable of 140W output. Availability of chipsets which enable full 240W capability via PD will be a welcome development. SAR predicts that the first products to launch with PD 3.1 at a power rating greater than 140W will be gaming laptops (and their adapters).

Full analysis and projections of the market, including by charging interface, are included in SAR’s USB Power and Charging service.
